My hand is complete. Why can't I win?

The most common reason is no yaku. In riichi mahjong you need at least one yaku to win, and dora do not count. It happens most after calling, for example when you pon an ordinary tile and have no value tiles or tanyao.

When you are in tenpai, look above your hand: "No yaku" means this hand cannot win right now. With a closed hand, declaring riichi gives you a yaku. See Yaku.

Someone discarded my winning tile. Why can't I ron?

You are probably in furiten: you discarded one of your waits yourself, or you just let a winning tile pass. In furiten you can only win by tsumo. See Furiten and defense.

Why is there no chi or pon button?

  • Check whether "No calls" under the table is switched on.
  • You can only chi the discard of the player on your left.
  • You cannot call after declaring riichi.
  • If someone else can win on the tile, or another player calls pon, your chi is overridden.

Why is there no riichi button?

Riichi needs all of these: no chi, pon or open kan (a closed kan is fine); after your draw, discarding one tile leaves you in tenpai; at least 1,000 points; and at least 4 tiles left in the wall.

After riichi, why can't I choose what to discard?

After riichi your hand is locked: any drawn tile that does not win must be discarded, and the game does it for you. When you can win, "Tsumo" or "Ron" pops up.

Who is the dealer? Why was East 1 played several times?

The player marked "Dealer" deals this hand. If the dealer wins, or is in tenpai at a draw, they deal again: the round stays the same and the honba count goes up by 1. See How a match works.

Why is the final "Result" different from my score?

The result is your score minus 30,000, divided by 1,000, plus the uma for your placing and the oka for first place. See How a match works.

Does the game save? Can I continue on another device?

Your game in progress and your stats are stored in this browser, so you can close the page and come back. On another device or browser, or after clearing site data, they are gone.

Do the AI players cheat?

No. The AI only sees its own hand, everyone's discards and melds, and the dora indicators: the same information you have. It never peeks at the wall.

Are the rules the same as Chinese, Taiwanese or Mahjong Soul mahjong?

Very different from Chinese and Taiwanese mahjong: riichi mahjong uses 13 tiles, has no flowers, requires a yaku, has riichi and furiten, and scores with han and fu.

It is broadly the same as the ranked rules on Mahjong Soul and Tenhou. The few differences (such as triple ron) are listed under "This site's default rules" in How a match works.
