Double Riichi in Riichi Mahjong: Rules, Han and Odds
In riichi mahjong, Double riichi (daburii) is worth 2 han: your starting hand (plus your first draw) is already tenpai, you declare riichi on your very first discard, and nobody has called chi, pon or kan before that. It replaces normal riichi — the two never stack.
The rules for Double Riichi
- Declare riichi on your first discard (the dealer after their 14 starting tiles, a non-dealer after their first draw)
- Nobody has called chi, pon or kan before it (closed kans count too); after any call, a first-discard riichi is just riichi
- Everything else is as for riichi: closed hand, tenpai, at least 1,000 points, at least 4 tiles left in the wall
- It replaces riichi: 2 han, not riichi's 1 han plus more

Double Riichi odds
Double riichi needs a tenpai hand in the first go-around. We shuffled the 136 tiles and drew 14 at random (a dealer's start, or a non-dealer's start plus first draw) 50,000,000 times and checked the shanten:
| Shanten of a 14-tile starting hand | Chance |
|---|---|
| Already complete (tenhou) | 0.0003% |
| Tenpai (riichi on the first discard) | 0.070% |
| 1-shanten | 2.3% |
| 2-shanten | 20% |
| 3-shanten | 44% |
Source: 50,000,000 random 14-tile hands.
- The chance that 14 tiles are already tenpai (discard one and you can riichi) is 0.070%; if they're already complete, that's tenhou.
- A non-dealer also needs nobody to call before their first discard, so the real rate is a little lower.
- In 40,000 computer hands on this site, double riichi came up 69 times: 0.21% of all wins and 0.45% of riichi wins.
