Menzen Tsumo (Fully Concealed Hand) in Riichi Mahjong: Han, Fu and Scoring
In riichi mahjong, Menzen tsumo (fully concealed hand, usually just called "tsumo") is worth 1 han: your hand is closed (no chi, pon or open kan) and you draw the winning tile yourself. No declaration and no other condition, so a closed hand always has a yaku when it wins by tsumo.

The rules for Menzen Tsumo
- Closed hand: no chi, pon or open kan (a closed kan is fine)
- You draw the winning tile yourself: a normal draw, a replacement tile after a kan, or the last tile of the wall
- With or without riichi; even with no other yaku, a closed hand can win by tsumo
- Once you've called, it's gone — an open hand needs another yaku to win by tsumo
Tsumo fu and payments
- A tsumo adds 2 fu — except pinfu tsumo, which is always 20 fu (you get both pinfu and menzen tsumo)
- Chiitoitsu is always 25 fu, tsumo or not
- Non-dealer tsumo: the dealer pays half, the other two non-dealers a quarter each
- Dealer tsumo: all three pay the same ("all")

FAQ
How many han is Menzen Tsumo?
1 han, closed only. No declaration needed — a closed hand that wins by tsumo gets it.
Does an open hand get a yaku for tsumo?
Not menzen tsumo. An open hand needs another yaku such as tanyao or yakuhai. Haitei and rinshan kaihou, though, don't require a closed hand.
Why is pinfu tsumo 20 fu?
Pinfu is the "no fu" hand, so by rule the 2 tsumo fu aren't added and it's scored at 20 fu — with both pinfu and menzen tsumo as yaku.
