Ryanpeikou (Twice Pure Double Sequence) in Riichi Mahjong: Rules and Examples
In riichi mahjong, Ryanpeikou is a closed-only yaku worth 3 han: two iipeikou in one hand — two different sequences, each doubled — plus a pair. It doesn't stack with iipeikou; it replaces it: iipeikou is 1 han, ryanpeikou 3 han.

The rules for Ryanpeikou
- Two different sequences, each appearing twice exactly: e.g. twice and twice
- The two sequences may be in the same suit ( and ) or different suits
- Closed only: any chi, pon or open kan removes it
- Any pair
Ryanpeikou vs Chiitoitsu
The 14 tiles of a ryanpeikou can always be split into seven pairs as well: is , and . Only one reading is used, and the scoring tries both and keeps the higher score.
- Chiitoitsu is 2 han 25 fu; ryanpeikou is 3 han with normal fu (at least 30 fu by ron)
- So a ryanpeikou shape is almost always scored as ryanpeikou, not seven pairs
- Exception: a hand using four of the same tile (e.g. ) can't be seven pairs at all, only ryanpeikou

How it relates to other yaku
- Iipeikou: two iipeikou make ryanpeikou; the two never count together.
- Chiitoitsu: a ryanpeikou shape is always a seven-pairs shape, and the higher score is used.
- Pinfu, tanyao: all four sets are sequences, so a two-sided wait often brings pinfu, and 2–8 only brings tanyao.
- Chinitsu: when both doubled sequences are in one suit, the hand can grow into a full flush.
